Twelve-year-old Adele Inge had a very industrious and supportive father. As featured in the July 1939 issue of Popular Science, Everett Inge created a homemade ice rink for his daughter in the basement of his homemade gymnasium. The rink measured 26 feet by 12 feet and was kept cool using freezing coils buried in the cement beneath the ice.
Each summer Adele would practice her routines and tricks in the basement, perfecting her unique blend of ice skating and acrobatics. About the time this story published, Adele had already made a name for herself. She’d go on to perform in skating shows that toured the world, and she was the first American woman to ever land a backflip on ice. -Sarah Durn, associate editor
